Schirmer Reference, an imprint of Macmillan Reference USA, has a long and illustrious history dating back to G. Schirmer, Music Publishers, Importers and Dealers, founded in 1866 by first
generation German-American, Gustav Schirmer. In 1900, the firm issued the first edition of Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, prepared by then-employee Theodore Baker, which
soon became the standard single-volume dictionary of musicians.

In 1969, Macmillan Publishing purchased G. Schirmer, Inc., and in 1973 created a new book publishing imprint, Schirmer Books. While the music publishing and rights business was sold to Music Sales and Hal Leonard in 1986, Macmillan concentrated on making Schirmer Books into the leading imprint of books about music, and expanding into the music textbook and trade book markets.

Schirmer Books reference division (now Schirmer Reference) along with Macmillan Reference USA is now part of Gale.
